Why does the 'c' click feel so stuck in my throat when I'm speaking sentences?

The 'c' click is tough because you're likely bracing your whole tongue. Try this: don't think of it as a 'ch' sound. Place the tip of your tongue against the back of your front teeth (the dental position) and pull it back sharply while creating a vacuum. If it sounds muffled, you aren't pulling back fast enough. Drill this: 'c' + 'a' slowly, then 'ca-ca-ca' in a rhythm. Use a metronome! Start at 60bpm and only increase once your tongue feels relaxed. Tension is your worst enemy here; if your jaw is tight, the click will never have the space to resonate properly.

You’re running into the classic 'transition drag'. When you pause, you're resetting your mouth muscles. To fix this, practice linking the end of the previous word with the 'c' in the next word. Try phrases like 'ndicela' (I request). Don't focus on the 'c' in isolation. Focus on the flow from the 'ndi-' into the click. It helps to keep your tongue tip hovering near those teeth even when you aren't clicking. Most learners let their tongue retreat to the roof of the mouth, which makes the jump to the dental position too far to cover in real-time.

I struggled with this for months. My breakthrough was realizing that in connected speech, the click doesn't need to be an exaggerated 'pop'. It just needs to be crisp. Record yourself saying 'caca' (clear/obvious) and 'cela' (request). Don't try to speed up your whole sentence yet. Just practice those two words until you can transition into them without the 'prep' pause. Also, check your hydration—if your mouth is too dry, dental clicks are significantly harder to produce clearly. Keep at it, Xhosa is a marathon, not a sprint!
