How do you handle the 'verb focus' issue when speaking?

The 'verb freeze' in Wolof usually happens because we try to translate the English tense system directly. Stop thinking about conjugating; start thinking about the 'aspect' markers (di, na, dafa). My breakthrough was using 'shadowing' with Dakar-based radio segments. Don't worry about the perfect marker at first—focus on the verb root + the person pronoun. If you say 'Mangi dem' instead of a more complex construction, people will still understand you perfectly. You're over-analyzing the grammar because you're treating it like a European language. Just get the root out, and the particles will follow once your rhythm improves.

I see this constantly with my students. The issue isn't the grammar; it's the lack of 'chunking.' Instead of trying to build sentences from scratch, memorize high-frequency phrases as single units. For example, memorize 'Duma dem' (I won't go) or 'Bëgg naa lekk' (I want to eat) as undivided blocks. If you have to pause to select 'naa' vs 'na', you'll always freeze. When you use tools like Chickytutor, force yourself to use these pre-packaged chunks rather than assembling them word-by-word. It builds the neural pathways where the verb markers become automatic, not conscious choices.

Honestly, reliance on apps for feedback is a trap. Wolof is a highly social language; you need to embrace the 'mistakes' in conversation. Try this drill: pick one verb (e.g., 'liggéey' - to work) and force yourself to use it in all three main aspect markers (di, na, dafa) in a timed one-minute monologue. Record yourself, listen back, and don't edit. The 'freeze' is just perfectionism. In Senegal, people appreciate the effort way more than grammatical precision. If you get the verb root right, the marker slip-ups are barely noticed. Stop aiming for textbook accuracy and aim for flow.
