I used to struggle with this constantly. What helped me was stop learning pronouns in isolation and start drilling them as 'fixed phrases' with the classifier. Don't learn 'chị'; learn 'chị hai' or 'chị cả' if they are the eldest. Use Anki but make the cards 'Contextual Situations' rather than 'English to Vietnamese.' Example: 'You are handing a gift to your father’s younger sister.' -> 'Con gửi quà cho cô ạ.' The 'ạ' at the end is the real secret—it’s the ultimate buffer for a beginner. Even if you pick the wrong pronoun, adding 'ạ' creates a polite tone that signals you are trying to be respectful, which usually buys you a pass with the elders.

The trap here is thinking in English terms. Stop trying to map 'cousin'—it doesn't exist in Vietnamese. Create a mental 'family hierarchy grid' before you eat. Print a simple chart with your parents at the center and map out the relative ages. If you are ever unsure, 'em' is your safest bet for someone younger, or 'anh/chị' if they seem older. If you mess up, don't apologize profusely; it makes it awkward. Just catch yourself, correct it mid-sentence, and move on. The more you over-explain, the more 'foreign' you sound. Focus on listening to how they address each other for ten minutes first—that’s your cheat sheet.

The hardest part isn't just the pronoun, it's the tone attached to it. If you use the right 'anh' but hit the wrong tone, it can sound sarcastic or dismissive. Practice the 'danh xưng' (pronouns) in front of a mirror with the specific tonal inflections for the North vs. South. In the North, the 'hỏi' and 'ngã' tones are distinct, while the South flattens them significantly. If you're going to a Northern family, make sure you don't drop those glottal stops, or you'll sound like you're talking down to them. Record yourself saying, 'Dạ, anh/chị ăn cơm chưa?' and listen for the pitch. If it’s flat, you’re missing the social glue that makes the pronoun matter.
