Can I actually make progress with only 20 minutes a day? Trying to learn Swedish on a commute.

20 minutes is actually a sweet spot if you're consistent, but stop trying to cram grammar rules on the train. Your brain won't absorb 'en' vs 'ett' declensions while you're exhausted. Instead, use that time for 'shadowing.' Pick a podcast like 'Radio Sweden på lätt svenska,' listen to one sentence, pause, and mimic the pitch accent exactly. The pitch accent is the biggest barrier for non-native speakers—if you don't get the melody right, the meaning gets lost. Spend your commute imitating the prosody, and save the grammar charts for a weekend morning with a coffee when your brain is fresh.

I did the commute method for two years. Forget the high-level grammar books on the train; they’ll just frustrate you. Focus on 'input density.' I recommend the 'Coffee Break Swedish' podcast—it’s structured for exactly 15-20 minute blocks. The trap most people fall into is trying to learn the 'sj' sound by reading descriptions of tongue placement. It’s useless. Don’t drill it; just listen to it on repeat until your brain starts to recognize the pattern. You’ll eventually just 'feel' the grammar (like definite endings) once you’ve heard them in context enough times. Consistency beats intensity every single time.

Since you’re low on energy, use a 'passive-active' hybrid strategy. Don't use a standard app. Use an AI tool to generate 5-10 sentences using specific vocabulary you encounter in your daily life, then have it read them back to you with a focus on sentence flow. The biggest nightmare for learners is SVO word order when they start adding adverbials, which triggers V2 word order shifts. Drill these 'V2 inversions' using a flashcard app like Anki for 10 minutes, then spend the other 10 just listening. If you try to do complex grammar after work, you'll burn out. Automate the drill part and keep the listening part purely for cadence.
