How do I stop my 'sj' sound from sounding like a generic 'sh' to my relatives?

The 'sj' sound is notoriously difficult because it varies by region, but the 'tourist' mistake is usually over-rounding the lips. If you're hitting 'sh' (like in 'shoe'), your tongue is likely too flat against the hard palate. Try this: pull the back of your tongue up toward your velum—like you’re about to gargle water—and keep your lips slightly relaxed, not pushed forward. Practice the word 'sjuk' by whispering until you get that friction focused in the throat rather than the front of the mouth. Don't force the 'sh'; let it be a bit 'messier' and more gutteral. It feels weird at first, but your grandmother will definitely hear the difference.

I went through the exact same thing with my morfar. The trap most of us fall into is trying to make a 'perfect' textbook sound. In Sweden, especially in Stockholm, the 'sj' sound is almost a soft, breathy whistle. I found it helpful to record myself alongside a native speaker on Forvo.com and isolate just that syllable. Stop trying to pronounce the whole word. Just say 'sju, sju, sju' for five minutes while doing chores. If you focus on the transition from the 's' to the 'j' rather than the sound itself, your muscles will eventually stop trying to default to the English 'sh' which is so much further forward in the mouth.

One nuance people miss: 'sk' before front vowels (like in 'sked') is completely different from 'sj'. 'Sked' uses the 'skj' sound which is closer to a 'sh', but it's much sharper. If you're using your 'sju' throat-friction for 'sked', she's going to correct you because that's actually wrong! For 'sked', keep it forward: tongue high and tight behind the teeth. For 'sju', relax the jaw and push the sound back. If you mix these two up, you'll sound like you're speaking with a heavy accent regardless of how 'authentic' you think your fricatives are. Master the split between the two first.
