You are trying to decode instead of acquire. When you listen to native speech, your brain is overloaded trying to apply rules. Stop! Instead, try a 'transcription gap' drill. Take a 30-second clip and write down what you hear, leaving blanks where you can’t catch the case ending. Then, check the transcript. Seeing the discrepancy between what you heard (e.g., 'mizo' vs 'mizi') and what was said will train your ears to focus on those specific inflectional markers. Also, don't worry about the dual number right now; focus on identifying the preposition-case pairings first, like 'z' needing the instrumental—that's lower hanging fruit.

Don't go back to drills—you'll burn out. The 'case nightmare' is normal because Slovenian case endings are often unstressed or blended in quick speech. Instead of trying to parse every genitive, try 'shadowing' short segments. Find a clip, listen, and repeat it immediately, focusing only on the rhythm rather than the grammar. If you know the *m* or *ga* ending is there but you miss it, that’s fine; your brain will eventually 'click' into recognizing the case by the surrounding verb prep. Try watching 'V dvoje' on RTV SLO; the dialogue is conversational enough that the cases sound more natural than in high-drama shows.

I wasted six months on grammar tables and it didn't help me understand a word of spoken Slovenian. Forget the drills. If you want to stop losing the plot, switch to Slovenian subtitles instead of English. It bridges the gap. By reading the text while hearing the cases, your brain starts mapping the sound to the written ending. It’s much faster than flipping through a textbook. Also, stop obsessing over the instrumental. In spoken, informal Slovenian, people often drop or swallow endings anyway. Focus on the verb stem and the context; the cases will eventually become background noise once you stop micro-analyzing every single word.
