Stop trying to jump straight into full teledramas—the jump in register between 'learner' Sinhala and 'spoken' Sinhala (the diglossia issue) is massive. Use a tool like Whisper to transcribe 30-second clips of Hiru News. Compare the transcribed text to the written script. You'll immediately see how the verb endings get dropped or simplified in speech (e.g., 'යනවා' becomes 'යනවා' but sounds more like 'යනං' in quick speech). Focus on identifying the 'root' verb versus the conjugated form. If you can bridge that gap, everything else will click.

I was in the same spot. My breakthrough wasn't watching shows, but listening to the 'Janahanda' radio archives. The vocabulary is repetitive, which is great for building pattern recognition. Don't worry about understanding every word; focus on the 'filler' words and transition markers like 'ඉතින්' (ithin) or 'ඇත්තටම' (aeththata-ma). Once you start hearing those markers, your brain stops trying to translate every syllable and starts catching the flow of the sentences. It’s about rhythm, not just vocabulary.

The trap is that textbooks teach you formal Written Sinhala, but nobody talks like that. Start with 'kavi' (poetry) or children's stories on YouTube—the enunciation is much clearer. For the retroflex sounds (ṭ, ḍ, ṇ), don't just listen; record yourself reading a passage and play it back against the audio clip. If your tongue isn't curling enough, you'll sound like you're speaking Sinhala with a Western accent. Focus on the distinction between the dental 't' and retroflex 'ṭ'. It makes a huge difference in how natives perceive your proficiency.
