Look, ignore the pitch accent for now. If you try to force it, you'll sound robotic and mess up your natural word stress, which is more important. In Belgrade, people care way more about your case endings (padeži) than your tone. My advice? Focus on vowel length (dužina). If you can distinguish between a short and long vowel, that’s 90% of the battle. Try this: record yourself saying 'grad' (city/hail) and 'râd' (work). If you can hear the difference in vowel duration, you’re already ahead of most foreigners. Don't stress the pitch until you've mastered the seven cases—that’s where you'll actually sound 'unintelligible' if you get it wrong.

I spent months obsessing over the four pitch accents and honestly, it was a waste of time at the A2 level. Native speakers will understand you perfectly fine without the tones; they'll just assume you're a foreigner. The real trap isn't the pitch—it's 'script-switching.' I see so many learners jump between Cyrillic and Latin and end up reading the Cyrillic phonetically wrong. Stick to one alphabet until you can read a paragraph without pausing. For the pitch, just listen to Radio Beograd. Don't try to reproduce it yet; just let your brain build the passive auditory map. Save the active production drills for when you’re actually conversational.

If you really want to avoid 'baking in' bad habits, focus on the placement of the stress instead of the pitch. Serbian stress is strictly fixed to the syllable, but it can shift to the proclitic. A common mistake is stressing the wrong syllable in cases like 'u kući' (in the house). If you mess up the pitch, natives will just think you have a cool accent. If you mess up the stress pattern, you sound like you aren't even trying to speak Serbian. Drill your stress placement using minimal pairs—it's much more practical than worrying about rising vs. falling tones at this stage. You’ll be understood anywhere from Belgrade to Niš if your stress is correct.
