The 'openness' usually comes from dropping the jaw too much. In BP, 'coração' is very vocalic and open, but in EP, the vowel space is more compressed and shifts toward a higher position. Try this: before you say the 'ão', pull the corners of your lips slightly back and keep your tongue higher in the mouth. For the nasal part, focus on directing the vibration toward the hard palate rather than the back of the throat. Try the 'ng' drill: say 'coraçã-ng' and then stop yourself before the 'g' sound hits. It forces the nasal cavity to engage without letting the vowel collapse into that wider Brazilian shape.

One major difference is the 'vowel reduction' in EP. We often neutralize or shorten final vowels, which affects how the preceding nasal sound is perceived. In BP, the 'ão' is a long, sustained diphthong. In EP, it's punchier. Don't let the sound trail off. Use the 'minimal pair' strategy: search for audio of 'coração' (EP) vs 'coração' (BP) on Forvo and focus on the duration. If you find your recordings are too open, you are likely over-emphasizing the second half of the dipthong. Try to cut the tail of the word off abruptly. If you're still struggling, look up the IPA charts for EP nasal vowels; seeing the visual representation of the vowel height really helps change the muscle memory.

I fought this exact battle for a year. The trap is that most audio materials online are biased toward BP. You need to stop listening to generic podcasts and find recordings of 'Padrão' announcers from RTP. My workflow: Record yourself saying 'pão', 'mão', and 'coração', then immediately play a clip of a native speaker from Lisbon. If your mouth feels 'lazy' or relaxed, you're doing it the Brazilian way. EP requires more muscular tension. Try practicing with a pen held horizontally between your teeth—it forces you to articulate with the tongue and lips rather than relying on heavy jaw movement. It sounds ridiculous, but it fixed my vowel closure in weeks.
