The 'frozen' feeling is normal because we often overthink the logic instead of the narrative. Think of Aspect as a camera lens: imperfective (robić) is a video recording—you see the action unfolding. Perfective (zrobić) is a snapshot—you see the result. If you're struggling with past tense, try the 'duration test'. If you can insert 'przez godzinę' (for an hour) without it sounding weird, it's almost certainly imperfective. For a drill: take a simple verb pair like czytać/przeczytać and write three sentences for each. Use 'często' (often) for the imperfective and 'w końcu' (finally) for the perfective. This helps anchor those 'flags' in your brain.

I honestly stopped trying to memorize grammar tables for this and started focusing on 'trigger words.' If you see 'zawsze' (always) or 'codziennie' (every day), your brain should automatically reach for the imperfective. If you see 'raz' (once) or 'potem' (then/afterwards), reach for the perfective. I recommend the 'Oscar Swan Grammar' book for the specific aspect section—it breaks down the 'inceptive' perfectives (like 'zacząć') which are a huge trap. Don't stress the plateau; it took me about six months of forced journaling before the aspect choice started feeling intuitive rather than a math problem.

If you're prepping for certification, you don't have time to 'feel' the aspect. Use the 'negation strategy': in Polish, if you are negating the action, you almost always want the imperfective. For example, 'Nie czytałem książki' (I didn't read/wasn't reading the book) is the default. Save perfective for when you are emphasizing that the action *failed* to happen as a specific event. Practice by converting short news blurbs from Polish media—highlight every verb and identify the aspect marker. If it describes a routine, it's imperfective. If it's a closed event in a timeline, it's perfective. Efficiency is key here.
