Struggling with the 'sz', 'cz', and 'ś' sounds—am I overthinking this?

Posted by u/Pronunciationfocus_214 / May 30, 2026

As someone who records themselves daily, I'm finding the distinction between these Polish consonant clusters incredibly difficult to hear and replicate. I keep listening to native recordings, but when I play back my own voice, it all sounds like one long hiss to me. Are there specific tongue-placement exercises that actually helped you improve your clarity, or is this just a result of not having enough listening hours?

It is definitely not just about listening hours; it is about muscle memory. Try the 'pencil trick': hold a pencil horizontally between your teeth to lock your jaw, then try to articulate 'sz' vs 'ś'. This forces your tongue to do the heavy lifting instead of relying on lip rounding. Also, try the 'i' vowel test. 'Ś' almost always appears before an 'i', whereas 'sz' rarely does. If you’re struggling with 'cz', remember it's essentially a 't+sz' combo. Isolate the sounds first, then build up to the clusters. Keep recording, but compare your audio to a slow-motion native clip rather than real-time speech.

You’re likely conflating these because the 'ś' is a soft palatal fricative, while 'sz' and 'cz' are retroflex. Try this: for 'sz' and 'cz', curl the tip of your tongue slightly upward toward the alveolar ridge. For 'ś', keep the tongue flat and push the middle of your tongue toward the hard palate—it shouldn't touch the roof like the others. Practice the minimal pair 'siano' vs 'szano'. Record yourself alternating them slowly. If you can't hear the difference in your playback, you're likely straining your throat; focus on the tongue position and let the breath flow naturally.

Honestly, don't sweat it too much in the beginning. I spent months obsessing over the 'sz/ś' distinction and realized that native speakers often understand the context even if your accent isn't perfect. That said, look up 'minimal pair drills' on YouTube specifically for Polish. My breakthrough was using a mirror to watch my tongue placement—if your lips are doing the exact same thing for 'sz' and 'ś', that’s your first problem. 'Sz' requires rounded lips, while 'ś' is much flatter. Stop trying to 'hear' it perfectly for now and focus on the physical shape of your mouth.
