Why do I keep forgetting to drop the absolutive suffix before adding possession?

I struggled with this for months. Here is what cleared it up: think of the absolutive (-tl/-tli) as a 'packaging' that only exists when the word is standing alone. When you add a possessive prefix (no-, mo-, i-), you’re 'opening' the package, so the suffix has to go. Try this drill: take ten nouns you know and write them in two columns. Left column: 'house' (calli). Right column: 'my house' (nocalli). Physically cross out the suffix with a red pen every time you move to the right column. It sounds basic, but the visual of slashing that -tl suffix helped me break the habit in about a week.

The 'unnatural' feeling usually comes from our brains trying to force English morphology onto Nahuatl. You are treating the suffix as part of the root, but it is effectively a determiner. I suggest 'Pairing Drills.' Don't practice words in isolation. Practice them only in phrases: 'Calli' (house) vs 'Nocalli' (my house), 'Citli' (hare) vs 'Icitl' (his/her hare). If you only ever drill the absolutive versions, you will keep defaulting to them. Force yourself to never say a noun without a prefix during your first 20 minutes of daily study. It forces the brain to treat the prefix as the mandatory marker.

When I coach students prepping for proficiency exams, I tell them to focus on rhythm. The -tl and -tli endings create a specific cadence in Classical or Central Nahuatl. When you add the possessive prefix, the word stress often shifts. Record yourself saying 'nocalli' vs 'calli'. If you say 'nocallitli', you will immediately hear the metrical error because the word becomes too long and clunky. Don't just look at the text; record your voice. Your ears will catch the 'extra' syllable long before your brain admits you made a grammar mistake. Audio feedback is the fastest way to kill this habit.
