For the 'tl', stop trying to make it a t-l sound. It’s a single lateral affricate. Try placing your tongue for the 't' but don't release the air over the tip; release it over the sides of your tongue. Think of it like a 't' that slides into a soft 'h' sound. For the saltillo, visualize it as a 'hiccup' or a brief pause in air—it’s not just a stop, it’s a momentary glottal closure. Try saying 'ah-ah' quickly; that gap is your saltillo. Don’t get discouraged by the lack of audio; focus on the physical sensation in your throat.

I struggled with this for months until I started using the 'minimal pair' method. Use the INALI dictionaries to find words where the saltillo changes the meaning (like 'cuitlachtli' vs variations with the glottal stop). Record yourself and compare it against the audio files on the 'Nahuatl.js' or the 'Yoikame' site. If you're learning the Huasteca variant, the saltillo is much more pronounced, while in Central variants it can sound almost like a ghost sound. Make sure you aren't confusing the glottal stop with a standard syllable break!

Stop recording long sentences; you're likely tripping because your brain is trying to process the absolutive endings ('-tl', '-tli', '-li') as separate words. Break them down. Take the word 'atl' (water). Say 'ah' then snap your tongue to the roof of your mouth for the 'tl' in one motion. If you’re tripping, you're likely adding a vowel between the 't' and 'l'. Use a mirror to ensure your tongue isn't moving forward too much. Also, check out the 'Aprender Nahuatl' YouTube channel; their breakdown of the glottal stop is the best I've found for non-native speakers.
