Is it worth learning the Modi script if I just want to read modern Marathi literature?

Posted by u/Falsebeginner_264 / May 30, 2026

I’ve been reading Marathi for a while using Devanagari, but I keep coming across old documents and some calligraphy styles that look completely different. Should I spend my limited study time on the Modi script, or is it irrelevant for someone who just wants to read modern news and novels? What is the actual utility for a non-academic learner?

Honestly, unless your goal is archival research or genealogy in the state archives (Pune/Mumbai), Modi is a distraction. For modern Marathi literature—Pu La Deshpande, Bhalchandra Nemade, etc.—it’s 100% Devanagari. You’re better off spending that time mastering oblique case markers and postpositions (like -चा/ची/चे). If you struggle with gender agreement in complex sentences, Modi won't help you there. Focus on reading 'Loksatta' editorials instead. If you want a drill, practice converting simple sentences into the oblique case; that's where most learners hit a wall, not the script.

Skip Modi for now. Even most native speakers here can't read it fluently—it's essentially a cursive shorthand that fell out of daily use. If you want to improve your reading, focus on the retroflex sounds (ट, ठ, ड) and how they change the flow of a sentence. A great exercise: find a Marathi short story, record yourself reading a paragraph, and listen for the difference between dental and retroflex stop consonants. If you can hear the difference clearly, your reading speed will naturally jump. Stick to the print editions of 'Anand' or 'Sadhana' to get comfortable with standard fonts.

Don't bother. I spent a month trying to learn the basics of Modi and it just made me rusty on my Devanagari reading speed. The real 'trap' for learners isn't the script, it's the postpositional phrases. For example, 'घराचा दरवाजा' (the door of the house) vs 'घरात' (in the house). If you want to read literature, you need to be able to scan sentences quickly to identify the subject-object-verb structure. Spend your study time on a frequency list of the 500 most common Marathi words. Trust me, the time you save will be better spent on actual comprehension than on palaeography.
