Why does the verb ending change when I add 'la' or 'ne' to a noun?

You’re running into the Ergative case (ne-pratyay). The golden rule: if the subject is marked with 'ne' (transitive, perfective aspect), the verb doesn't agree with the subject anymore—it agrees with the object! If there’s no object, the verb defaults to neuter singular (3rd person). Try this drill: take a simple sentence like 'Mi amba khalla' (I ate a mango). Change the object to 'keli' (banana, feminine). It becomes 'Mi keli khalli'. See how the 'li' ending followed the object? Stop looking at the subject and immediately scan for the object's gender/number. If you can master this pivot, you'll stop guessing.

I struggled with this for months until I stopped trying to translate directly from English. Think of 'ne' as an agent marker rather than a subject marker. When you use it, the verb is essentially looking for the 'patient' of the action. My mental cheat sheet: If the sentence has 'ne', ignore the person speaking and check the gender of the noun being acted upon. For practice, write out 10 sentences with 'Mi' (I) doing things to different objects. Don't worry about retroflex sounds yet—just get the agreement pattern down. Once the 'ne' + object agreement clicks, the rest of the oblique case stuff starts feeling secondary.

The 'la' and 'ne' markers trigger oblique case changes that confuse everyone at first. If you're prepping for exams, use the 'Oblique Table' method. Make a grid: [Direct Case] vs [Oblique Case]. For example, 'Mulga' (boy) becomes 'Mulga-la' (to the boy). Notice the root change? You have to memorize those base changes before you can even touch verb agreement. If you don't get the noun right, the verb will always be wrong. Spend one week focusing only on noun inflections in writing, then move to verb agreement. Don't rush into speech until your written declensions are automatic.
