Don't sweat the 'gè' habit for now—it's the universal 'get out of jail free' card. Native speakers won't judge you; they'll just be happy you're communicating. To stop freezing, stop trying to memorize a master list. Focus on the 'Big Four' first: 'gè' (general), 'wèi' (people/polite), 'zhī' (animals/small objects), and 'jiàn' (matters/clothing). Practice by labeling items in your room with sticky notes that include the noun *and* its measure word together as one unit. If you learn 'yī běn shū' (one book) as a single chunk rather than two separate words, your brain won't have to search for the measure word mid-sentence. It becomes automatic muscle memory.

Speaking from experience in Taiwan, don't let perfect be the enemy of good. If you absolutely blank, just use a 'long' pause or a filler word like 'nèige...' (that one...). Most people will unconsciously supply the correct measure word in their response, which is a great way to learn in the wild. One shortcut: notice the shape of what you're talking about. If it's long and thin, it’s almost always 'tiáo' or 'gēn'. If it’s flat, it’s 'zhāng'. Instead of drilling lists, play a game where you point at objects in your house and force yourself to say 'yī [measure word] [noun]' as fast as you can. If you get it wrong, who cares? The repetition is what kills the 'gè' reflex.

I recommend using an SRS (spaced repetition system) like Anki, but change your card format. Don't use 'Measure Word' cards; instead, use 'Fill-in-the-blank' sentences. Creating a card like 'Wǒ xiǎng yào mǎi ___ shū' teaches you how the measure word feels inside a real sentence structure rather than as a vocabulary item in isolation. Also, ignore regional variants like the Mainland 'liǎng' vs 'èr' for measure words until you’re B1—it’s too much overhead. Just stick to your current deck and force yourself to say the measure word *before* the noun, even if you have to slow your speech down. It's better to sound slow and correct than fast and confusing.
