Stuck on the 'me-' vs 'meng-' prefix confusion when speaking

Posted by u/Intermediatelearne_902 / May 30, 2026

I've been learning for about eight months and I’m hitting a massive plateau. I understand the grammar rules for Malay affixes on paper, but in the heat of a conversation, I freeze up trying to decide which variation of the prefix to use. Does anyone have a mental shortcut for these, or should I just use Chickytutor.com to run through drill sessions until it becomes muscle memory?

Stop overthinking the 'me-' vs 'meng-' rules during conversation—even native speakers drop these prefixes entirely in colloquial speech. If you're struggling, focus on the 'nasalization' rule: if the root word starts with a vowel (e.g., 'ambil' becomes 'mengambil') or a hard 'k', 'g', 'h', use 'meng-'. If you're freezing, just default to the root word for now; people will understand you. My advice: try the 'vowel-first' drill. Make a list of 20 words starting with vowels and 20 starting with consonants. Practice saying them out loud specifically focusing on that nasal intake. If you mess up, don't stop—a slight hesitation is more disruptive than using the wrong prefix.

Forget the apps for this; they make you feel like you aren't progressing because they grade you on textbook formal Malay. In KL or Singapore, we barely use the 'me-' prefix in casual chat. We shorten 'mengambil' to 'ambil' or 'tengah ambil'. If you really want to lock it in for formal settings, find a language partner and play the 'Prefix Tag' game. Take turns saying a root word, and you have to snap your fingers and say the correct prefixed version within one second. It’s about building speed, not perfect grammar. You’ll eventually stop 'calculating' the prefix and start 'feeling' the mouth position for the next sound.

Chickytutor is okay for rote memorization, but it’s failing you because it doesn't simulate conversational pressure. If you want to use an LLM, prompt it to act as a 'strict conversation partner' that only corrects your prefix mistakes after the sentence ends, rather than interrupting you. Give it this prompt: 'I want to practice spoken Malay. Let's talk about daily routines. Respond to me, but keep your sentences simple. If I use the wrong me-/meng- prefix, tell me at the end of your next response.' This way, you keep your flow going while getting the feedback loop you need. Also, focus on the 'K-T-P-S' rule—those consonants disappear when you add 'meng-'. That’s your best shortcut.
