Cyrillic handwriting vs. print: How much should I worry about cursive?

Posted by u/Traveler_563 / May 30, 2026

I'm a traveler heading to North Macedonia in a few months, and while I’ve mastered reading standard Macedonian Cyrillic print, I’m terrified that I won't be able to read menus or handwritten notes if they use the cursive script. How common is it to encounter 'hard-to-read' handwriting in daily city life, and should I prioritize learning to write/read the cursive forms of letters like 'т' and 'п' before I go?

Honestly? Don't stress the cursive. In modern Skopje, most menus are printed in standard Cyrillic fonts. You’ll rarely encounter handwriting unless you're buying something at a traditional pazar or getting a handwritten receipt. If you really want to prepare, focus on the cursive 'т' and 'п'. The 'т' looks like a lowercase cursive 'm' and the 'п' looks like a lowercase cursive 'n'. It’s a classic trap for foreigners. Print out a Cyrillic cursive chart, trace it for 10 minutes a day for a week, and you’ll be fine. Your real focus should be on the definite suffixes (-от, -та, -то) because you'll hear those everywhere, and they change the meaning of your nouns instantly.

I was in your shoes a year ago. Here is my advice: skip writing entirely. You don't need to produce it, you just need to decode it. My drill was to find random Macedonian handwritten grocery lists on Instagram or local blogs (search #македонскијазик) and just try to transcribe them into print. The biggest issue isn't the letters; it's the clitics. When you see 'јас му го дадов', the clitics 'му' and 'го' are often jammed together in informal notes. Read aloud to get used to the rhythm. If you can read the print, cursive is just a visual hurdle, not a linguistic one. You’ll survive the menus easily—most places have English copies too if you get stuck.

If you're worried about 'reading' vs 'writing,' treat it like a logic puzzle. The cursive 'б', 'г', 'д', 'п', and 'т' are the ones that actually look different from their print counterparts. Don't worry about the rest. Honestly, I'd argue that your time is better spent mastering verb aspect (perfective vs. imperfective). If you misread a letter, you can usually guess the context from the menu, but if you mix up your verb aspect, you’ll sound like you're speaking a different language. Spend your pre-trip time on the 'Сè што е убаво се учи' workbook series for the grammar basics—it's much more useful than perfecting your cursive handwriting.
