Why does my recording of the tone 'mai ek' sound wrong to native ears?

Posted by u/pronunciationfocus_447 / May 30, 2026

I’ve been recording myself practicing minimal pairs in Lao, but my partner says my 'mai ek' (low tone) sounds more like a flat mid-tone. I’m struggling with the physical tension required for the glottal check on short vowels. Does anyone have specific tips for adjusting vocal cord tension to distinguish these tones in Lao, or should I shift my focus to listening exercises first?

The 'mai ek' tone is a low, slightly falling tone, but the real trap is the glottal closure. If you’re over-tensing, you’ll naturally pitch-shift upward toward a mid-range. Try this: hum a low note while gently placing a finger on your thyroid cartilage (your Adam’s apple area). You should feel a slight 'drop' or relaxation of the larynx rather than a squeeze. Focus on 'vocal fry' at the start of the vowel—that raspy, creaky sound is the key to getting that low-tone quality right. Don't worry about the mid-tone yet; get the low tone feeling 'lazy' and relaxed, not tight.

Stop recording yourself for a second and just listen to 'long' vs 'short' vowels first. Many learners confuse the tone because the vowel length is cutting off prematurely, making the tone sound clipped and flat. Practice with 'bor' (no) vs 'baw' (the particle). If you can't hear the difference in duration, you'll never nail the tone. Instead of minimal pairs, try 'shadowing' native audio at 0.5x speed. Don't focus on your vocal cords yet; focus on the airflow. If the air isn't consistent, the glottal check will always sound like a mid-tone mistake.

Honestly, I spent months obsessing over vocal tension and it led nowhere. The trick isn't a medical adjustment of your throat—it's about the 'attitude' of the word. The low tone in Lao feels like a downward shrug. When you say the word, imagine you are slightly disappointed or bored. It sounds silly, but it shifts your pitch naturally into that low range. I use the app 'Forvo' to listen to how natives say 'mae' (mother) vs 'mae' (to fit). Use high-quality headphones. If you can’t hear the micro-nuance in the speaker's pitch, your brain won't signal your muscles to mimic it correctly.
