Vowel placement logic - why is the 'i' sometimes before the consonant?

Posted by u/absolutebeginnerwh_191 / May 30, 2026

I'm a total beginner and the Lao script is absolutely throwing me off. I get the consonant-vowel-consonant structure, but I keep stumbling over vowel placement—like how some vowels appear to the left or top of the consonant rather than following it linearly. Is there a mnemonic or a specific way to visualize the 'cluster' of a Lao syllable to stop me from reading the vowels in the wrong order?

It helps to stop thinking of the Lao script as a linear string of letters and start viewing it as a 'syllabic block.' Think of the consonant as the anchor—the vowel is just a modifier attached to that anchor, regardless of its position. For vowels like ໄ (ai) or ເ (e) that sit to the left, I tell my students to treat them as 'pre-fixed' markers that prime the tongue for the consonant sound. Try this: print out a page of text and physically circle the consonant in every syllable first. Once you isolate the consonant, the vowel markers (even the 'floating' ones) become secondary visual cues. Practice writing "ໄກ່" (chicken) and "ເປັດ" (duck) repeatedly until your brain stops trying to scan left-to-right like the Latin alphabet.

I struggled with this for months until I switched from typing to handwriting. Digital fonts make the spacing look weird, but when you write by hand, you realize the vowel and consonant are essentially dancing around each other. Use the 'Consonant-First' rule: always identify your consonant cluster first (look for the unique shape), then identify the vowel. If you see a vowel before the letter, just acknowledge it as part of that specific syllable's 'package' and don't try to pronounce it until you hit the consonant. Also, don't let it discourage you from using politeness particles like 'ໂດຍ' (doi) or 'ເຈົ້າ' (chao); those will help you memorize the script patterns through constant exposure to common phrases.

The vowel placement is definitely a trip, but remember that the tone rules depend on the consonant class (High, Mid, Low), not the vowel position! My drill for you: take a list of simple CV combinations and write out the vowel in its correct spot, but say the consonant sound out loud *before* the vowel sound every single time. E.g., for 'ໄກ', say /k/ then /ai/. By forcing your brain to vocalize the consonant first, you break the habit of reading from the left-most visual component. Regarding the vowels like ະ and າ, ignore the 'order'—just see them as a single phonemic unit attached to the consonant. It clicks after about 500 repetitions. Stick with it, the Lao script is actually very logical once you stop treating it like English.
