I tell my students this: -은/는 establishes the 'topic'—what we are talking about—while -이/가 identifies the 'subject' of a specific predicate. For personality, if you say '그 사람은 성격이 좋아요,' you are using '그 사람' as the topic and '성격' as the subject of the trait. If you find yourself stuck, try the 'Contrastive' test. Can you swap the particle for '도' (also)? If yes, it's almost certainly -은/는. If you are highlighting a NEW piece of information that wasn't previously known to the listener, use -이/가. Don't stress too much—even native speakers occasionally swap these in casual speech, but focusing on the 'known vs. new' information split will fix 90% of your usage errors.

Stop over-analyzing the textbook definitions and start 'shadowing' subtitles. Watch a variety show like 'Running Man' and pay attention to how they talk about personality. When they introduce a guest, they almost always use -은/는 (e.g., 'OOO씨는 정말 착해요'). But if they are reacting to a specific action—like someone suddenly helping out—they'll pivot to -이/가 to highlight the specific trait they just witnessed (e.g., '와, OOO씨가 정말 착하네요!'). Stop the grammar drills for two days and just count how many times you hear each in your favorite show. Your brain will identify the pattern faster than a chart ever could.

Think of -은/는 as your 'camera lens.' When you use -은/는 for a personality trait, you're setting the scope: 'As for X, their personality is Y.' Use -이/가 when you're answering a question or narrowing in on a specific focus. A great drill: pick a friend and write five sentences using -은/는 to describe them generally (e.g., '철수는 성격이 급해요'), then imagine someone asks 'Who is impatient?'—that's when you switch to '철수가 급해요.' Treating the particle as a focus-shifter rather than just a grammar rule helped me stop overthinking it.
