Only have 20 minutes a day—is it better to focus on phrases or grammar?

Posted by u/Busyprofessionalwi_375 / May 30, 2026

I’m a busy professional working full-time, and I only have a 20-minute window each day to dedicate to Irish. I’m feeling discouraged because my progress feels non-existent. Should I be using this time to drill prepositional pronouns and syntax rules to build a solid foundation, or should I spend the time on mobile apps just to get some daily exposure? Any advice on how to be efficient with such limited time would be appreciated.

Honestly, skip the dry grammar drills for now. With only 20 minutes, you’ll burn out. Instead, use the 'Sentence Mining' approach. Focus on a single prepositional pronoun per week—start with 'ag' (at). Don't just memorize the chart; write out three sentences that describe your actual day: 'Tá ocras orm' (I am hungry), 'Tá leabhar agam' (I have a book). By anchoring the grammar to your own life, the VSO structure starts to feel intuitive rather than a chore. Consistency trumps intensity every single time.

Don't let the apps trap you into a false sense of progress. If you only have 20 minutes, spend 5 minutes on a grammar point—like the eclipsis after 'i'—and 15 minutes listening to 'Blúire Gaeilge' or a similar podcast for native speakers. You need to hear the rhythm of the language to understand why the word order is VSO. If you just tap buttons on an app, you'll never learn to hear the mutations in real time. Focus on one mutation a day; it’s better to master 'séimhiú' on nouns than to learn 50 random phrases.

You’re spinning your wheels because you're trying to learn 'General Irish,' which doesn't really exist. Pick a dialect—Connemara, Munster, or Ulster—and stick to it. If you’re drilling syntax rules from a textbook that mixes them, you’ll just get frustrated. Spend your 20 minutes reading one short story in your chosen dialect every day. When you hit a prepositional pronoun, look it up, then read the sentence aloud five times. It’s the fastest way to get comfortable with the 'Irish' way of thinking without getting bogged down in theory.
