How can I check if my pronunciation is actually 'native' enough?

Honestly, avoid the AI tools for now. Irish phonology relies so heavily on the distinction between broad and slender consonants—if you don't 'caol' (slenderize) your consonants correctly, no amount of AI feedback will save the intelligibility. My advice? Don't stress about a 'native' accent yet. Focus on the VSO word order and your prepositional pronouns. If you use 'liom' instead of 'leis' or mess up an initial mutation (like not eclipsing after 'ar'), that’s much more jarring to a native speaker than a slightly off vowel sound. Record yourself, then listen to Teanglann.ie for the specific dialect (Connemara/Munster/Ulster) you're aiming for. Mimic the rhythm, not just the phonemes.

I tell my students this all the time: stop worrying about being 'native' and start worrying about your 'seanchas'—your flow. Poetry is tough because of the stylized meter. Instead, try recording yourself reading a news clip from Nuacht TG4. It’s conversational, standard, and the pacing is natural. For a drill, focus on your 'slender' r vs. 'broad' r; that’s where most learners hit a wall. If you want to use technology, don't rely on automation. Join the 'Gaeilge' Discord or a local ciorcal comhrá. Real humans will tell you immediately if your mutations are confusing the meaning. Being 'unintelligible' usually happens when you force English syntax into Irish grammar, not because of your accent.

I wouldn't trust a generic AI tutor like Chickytutor with Irish. Most of these models are trained on dominant languages and treat Irish accents as 'noise' or simply fail to recognize the phonetic shift in initial mutations (e.g., how 'tá' becomes 'bhfuil' under certain conditions). You’re better off using the 'Forvo' database. Look up the phrases you're struggling with, listen to the native uploads, and record yourself saying them back-to-back. If you can't hear the difference between your recording and theirs, your ear isn't trained yet. Focus on listening first; your mouth will eventually follow. Don't waste money on automated 'accent checkers' that don't even understand the nuances of the Gaeltacht regions.
