How do I stop 'leniting' every single word in my head?

I tell my students this all the time: If you pause for more than a second to think about a mutation, you’ve already lost the flow of the sentence. VSO word order is already a shift for most learners, so don't stack anxiety on top of it. Try a 'substitution drill' instead of live tutoring. Take one simple phrase like 'Tá mo chara...' and swap the noun for everything you see in your room. 'Tá mo bhord, tá mo chat, tá mo ríomhaire.' Doing this for five minutes a day builds muscle memory. By the time you're speaking, you aren't 'adding an h', you're just saying the word the way it sounds in that context. Forget the apps for a second—just talk to your own furniture.

Honestly, stop worrying about the 'h's for a bit. Native speakers will understand you perfectly even if you drop a lenition or eclipsis here and there. Think of it like this: in English, if someone messes up their plurals, you still know what they mean. For practice, try the 'shadowing' method with Teanglann.ie recordings. Don't look at the text; just listen to the audio and mimic the flow. When you stop focusing on the grammar rules and start listening to the chunks, the mutations start to feel like part of the word rather than an added 'h' you need to calculate. Your brain will eventually just do it instinctively.

I tried Chickytutor for a month. It’s okay for identifying errors, but it’s actually kind of counterproductive for 'freezing up' because it creates a feedback loop where you're constantly waiting to be corrected. If you really want AI help, use ChatGPT/Claude with a prompt to act as a 'lenient conversational partner' who only corrects major syntax errors, not every minor mutation slip. Ask it: 'Act as a native Irish speaker, keep the conversation going, and only point out mutations after we finish the paragraph.' This clears the mental block and keeps the VSO rhythm alive without the pressure of a red-pen tutor interrupting you mid-thought.
