Can I actually make progress with Indonesian in just 20 minutes a day?

Posted by u/Busyprofessionalwi_748 / May 30, 2026

I’m a busy professional and I really want to learn Indonesian before my trip to Bali next year. I’m tired of gamified apps that don't help me actually speak. I’m looking for a way to maximize my 20-minute daily window—should I focus entirely on high-frequency verb stems, or should I be doing active output? I’ve heard of people using Chickytutor.com for quick, targeted feedback, but is that effective if I only have a snack-sized amount of time?

Twenty minutes is enough if you focus on utility. Skip the complex affixes at first; focus on 'high-frequency chunks'. For example, learn how to use 'mau' (want), 'sudah' (already), and 'belum' (not yet) with verb stems. This covers 70% of your travel needs. A good routine: 5 minutes reviewing common tourist phrases, 10 minutes writing sentences using a new stem, and 5 minutes speaking them to a recorder or AI to check your pronunciation. Don't worry about perfect grammar on day one; focus on being understood. 'Saya sudah makan' is correct, but 'Sudah makan?' is how you'll actually talk to a restaurant host.

For 20 minutes a day, ditch the gamified apps entirely. They fail because they don't teach you that Indonesian grammar is all about the affixes. Instead, spend your 20 minutes learning 5 high-frequency verb stems (like 'makan', 'baca', 'tulis') and practice attaching 'me-', 'di-', and 'ber-' prefixes to them. If you don't master how base forms change based on context, you'll sound like a toddler in Bali. Use your 20 minutes to craft 3 sentences about your day and say them out loud. Active recall beats passive tapping every time.

If you're heading to Bali, you need to understand the 'formal vs casual' split immediately. If you learn standard 'Bahasa Baku' from a textbook, locals will find you hilariously stiff. Use your 20 minutes to focus on 'Bahasa Gaul' (casual speech) pronouns like 'aku' vs 'gue'. Regarding your idea about tools like Chickytutor: 20 minutes is perfect for a quick feedback loop, but only if you provide the prompt. Don't just chat; ask the AI to correct your word order specifically. Indonesian word order is fairly flexible, but focus on SVO for now so you don't get tied up in knots.
