As someone who grades these exams, I see this all the time. The biggest trap is the 'me-' prefix. In Bandung casual speech, you drop it constantly (e.g., 'beli' instead of 'membeli'). For your prep, try the 'formal switch' drill: translate a news article from Kompas into your own spoken slang, then back again. If you can write a paragraph about your day using only standard 'KBBI' grammar without any clipped prefixes, your brain will start to flag the difference. Force yourself to use full sentences with 'saya' and 'adalah' during your study sessions. It feels stiff, but that's exactly what the rubrics look for.

I realized my slang was bleeding into my writing because I associated Indonesian only with my friend group. To fix this, I stopped using my 'chat' apps for 30 minutes of daily writing practice. I forced myself to write formal diary entries using formal affixes like 'ter-' and 'ke-an' correctly. Also, be careful with your pronouns. If you're using 'aku/kamu' in your essay, you've already failed the register check. Replace them with 'saya/Anda' everywhere. Create a table of 'Gaul vs. Formal' (e.g., 'nggak' vs 'tidak', 'bikin' vs 'membuat') and memorize the formal equivalents as a separate vocabulary list. It helps to mentally 'silo' them.

Compartmentalization is about physical cues. When you practice for the exam, change your environment—don't sit in the same chair where you chat with your Bandung friends. Use a specific set of formal resources like the 'Tes Kemahiran Berbahasa Indonesia' (UKBI) sample tests. When you get stuck, look for the 'di-' and 'ter-' passive constructions; slang speakers rarely use them, but formal writing depends on them. If you catch yourself wanting to write 'udah' or 'lagi' (in the sense of 'still'), highlight it in red and force the 'sudah' or 'sedang' correction immediately. You need to treat the formal register as a technical skill, not just a language style.
