Struggling with the high/low tone markings—do you actually write them in daily Igbo texts?

Think of tone markings like musical notation. You need them at the start to 'hear' the melody, but experienced speakers internalize the pitch contour. For 'akwa' (egg/cry/cloth/bridge), focus on context first. My drill: record yourself saying the four variations of 'akwa' while exaggerating the pitch. If you can't hear the difference in your recording, you aren't ready to drop the diacritics yet. Stick to resources like 'Omenala' that use them properly until your ears naturally track the vowels. Native speakers drop them because they have 20 years of context, not because the tones don't matter.

I wasted six months trying to memorize every diacritic in textbooks, but it frustrated me when I couldn't find them online. My advice: use them for vocabulary acquisition but stop obsessing over them when reading casual WhatsApp messages. When you see a word like 'akwa', let the verb in the sentence guide you. If it's 'akwa ga-agbaji' (the egg will break), you know it’s the egg. Train your ears via the 'Igbo Radio' app rather than staring at text. The tones are a phonological reality, not a visual one. Focus on listening to native speakers and mimicking their pitch shifts.

The trap is assuming Central Igbo standard tones apply everywhere. If you learn the Owerri dialect but talk to someone from Anambra, those diacritics might lead you astray. Don't rely solely on apps that use a generic 'standard'—they often simplify tones to keep the UI clean. My technique: find one native speaker on iTalki and practice minimal pairs. Ask them to say 'àkwá' (egg) vs 'ákwá' (cloth) and watch their jaw/throat position. You'll realize that tone is tied to vowel harmony and tension. Keep writing marks in your notebook, but don't panic when you don't see them in the wild.
