20 minutes a day: Should I prioritize vocabulary or getting comfortable with the Igbo sound inventory?

Don't choose one over the other; integrate them. Since you only have 20 minutes, spend the first 5 minutes on 'minimal pair' drills. For example, practice 'kpá' (to pluck) vs 'pá' (to carry). If you ignore the implosives early on, you’ll bake muscle memory errors into your vocabulary that are much harder to fix later. Use your remaining 15 minutes to learn phrases that actually contain those sounds, like 'Kedu ka ị dị?' (How are you?). You’ll get the habit of the glottal stop and implosives while learning functional Igbo. Consistency with the sounds is more important than raw speed.

Honestly, focus on the sounds. Igbo is tonal and phonetically distinct; if you rush vocab without mastering the 'gb' and 'kp' implosives, you'll reach a point where native speakers won't understand your words even if you've memorized the dictionary. I spent my first two months just listening to Owerri radio clips and mimicking the cadence. Use your 20 minutes to Shadowing: take one simple phrase like 'Biko, nyere m aka' (Please, help me) and repeat it for 10 minutes until your tongue feels natural, then spend the other 10 learning one new noun per day. It’s a slow burn, but it saves you from being misunderstood later.

I'd skip the generic travel phrase apps for now. They rarely drill the vowel harmony or the implosives correctly. With 20 minutes, grab a copy of Emenanjo’s grammar guides or look for audio recordings of Central Igbo. The 'gb' sound is essentially a voiced implosive—try to inhale slightly while making the 'b' sound. If you don't get the mechanics down now, you'll just be learning to mispronounce words, which leads to 'fossilization.' Spend 10 minutes daily on phonetic isolation and 10 on listening to short stories. You'll pick up vocab contextually, which sticks better than rote memorization anyway.
