The 'tt' in Icelandic isn't just a long T; it's a preaspirated stop. To get that breathy quality, don't think about the tongue position first—think about the airflow. Try this drill: say 'h' followed by a light 't' but keep your tongue pressed against the alveolar ridge for a split second longer than usual. For 'dóttir', whisper the 'h' part very clearly: 'dó-h-tir'. Repeat that cluster 'h-tir' in isolation until you feel that puff of air escaping before the contact. Once you master that, blend it back into the word. Avoid clenching your jaw; tension kills the crispness of the preaspiration.

I struggled with this for months until I stopped trying to force the air and started listening to how the 'tt' functions as a bridge. For words like 'dóttir' or 'vetur', I found that recording myself and slowing it down to 0.5x speed in Audacity helped me realize I was stopping the airflow too early. Instead of a 't' sound, try to imagine you are 'sighing' into the consonant. Also, check out the 'Icelandic Online' pronunciation modules. They have some great isolated audio tracks for 'tt' specifically. Don't worry about it being perfect yet—it's one of the hardest things for English speakers to nail because we tend to just lengthen the vowel and ignore the aspiration.

If you're using recordings, stop just listening on loop. That's passive and your brain is likely auto-correcting to English 't' sounds. Use a tool like Forvo to isolate clips of 'dóttir', then use a spectrogram viewer like Praat. You should be able to visually see the 'noise' (the aspiration) before the silent gap of the 't'. If your spectrogram looks identical to your own, analyze the gaps. You're likely not holding the tongue closure long enough. Practice 'dó-T-tir' with an exaggerated 'h' in the middle. It sounds ridiculous, but over-articulating the 'h' is the only way to build the muscle memory for the aspiration.
