As a teacher, I tell my students: the stress mark (tonos) is your best friend, not your enemy. It is the 'anchor' of the word. Try this drill: pick 10 common verbs and conjugate them aloud, exaggerating the stressed syllable by physically tapping your desk as you say it. It links the movement to the sound. Also, remember that in Cyprus, the cadence is slightly different than in Athens—don't try to mimic a 'perfect' mainland sound if you're nervous. Just focus on the position of the tonos. If you miss a stress, don't stop and correct yourself; keep the flow moving. Flow beats accuracy in a first conversation.

Honestly, stop overthinking the stress marks and focus on the 'musicality' of the sentence. Greek is very rhythmic. My advice for your call: record yourself reading back a dialogue—not word by word, but phrase by phrase. Listen specifically for the vowel lengthening on the stressed syllable. If you’re struggling between cases (like the dative/genitive distinction), don't panic if you get the stress wrong while you're hunting for the right case ending. Natives will understand you perfectly even if your accent is 'robotic.' Just prioritize the vowel quality over perfect placement. You'll sound better than you think!

If you want to practice before your call, use an TTS (Text-to-Speech) engine set to 'Greek - Greece.' Paste your planned conversation script into an AI voice generator and listen to it at 0.75x speed. This helps you hear exactly where the stress falls on multi-syllabic words like 'ευχαριστούμε.' The biggest pitfall for learners is usually the shift in stress when moving between noun cases; the AI will show you how the stress jumps. Practice echoing the AI for 10 minutes a day. It won't make you perfect, but it will build the muscle memory so you aren't calculating the rules in your head while you're trying to talk.
