How do you handle 'word-building' with affixes when speaking quickly?

Honestly, stop trying to build words from scratch while speaking. It’s a trap for intermediates. Instead, treat common affix-heavy concepts as 'lexical chunks.' If you need the word for 'breakfast' (matenmanĝo), don't think 'morning-eat,' just memorize the compound as a single unit. For drills, pick a root like 'lern-' and spend five minutes forcing every possible suffix: lernanto, lernejo, lernaĵo, lernema. The speed only comes once your brain stops viewing these as math problems and starts seeing them as vocabulary entries. Don't overthink the -n when you're compounding; get the root string right first, then add the accusative once you're comfortable.

The plateau is usually because your brain is trying to parse the logic rather than the meaning. I suggest 'Shadowing' with podcasts like Muzaiko. Listen to a sentence, pause, and force yourself to construct the word 'malfeliĉa' or 'ebla' before the speaker finishes. If you stutter, don't worry about the accusative -n yet. Focus on the flow. If you use an AI tool, don't just ask it to chat; ask it to give you a root (e.g., 'san-') and force yourself to spit out five derivatives in 10 seconds. Accuracy will lag behind speed at first, and that’s perfectly fine. Fix the word-building errors after the session, not inside the conversation flow.

I wouldn't lean too hard on AI tutors for this. They often don't catch the nuance of Esperanto word-building, and you might end up learning 'Frankenstein' words that are grammatically correct but culturally unnatural. Try flashcard decks like Anki, but specifically set to 'Production' mode—where you see the English definition and have to build the Esperanto word using affixes. It’s better to build a mental library of common patterns (like using 'ek-' for sudden actions) so you aren't doing the math in real-time. Practice in front of a mirror: take a root, add a prefix, add a suffix, and build the sentence. If you can't say it in 3 seconds, drill that specific compound until it’s reflexive.
