I'm tired of Duolingo; how do I move from 'reading' to actually producing Dutch?

Ditch the passive apps. If you want to fix your word order (V2) and separable verbs, you need to force your brain to structure the sentence before you speak. Try the 'Shadowing + Expansion' drill: listen to a Dutch news clip, pause, repeat it, and then try to change the subject or tense. For the 'de/het' struggle, stop memorizing words in isolation. Always learn the noun with its article ('de tafel', 'het huis'). If you use an AI, give it a specific prompt: 'Correct my V2 errors and point out if I used a separable verb incorrectly.' It’s the messy, active recall you’re missing.

I wouldn't rely on a single site. The problem with apps is they don't force you to handle the vowel length differences—like 'bus' vs 'boos'—which drastically change meaning. If you want to speak, you need to hear your own voice. Use an AI to generate a scenario (e.g., 'ordering at a Dutch snackbar') and record yourself speaking the response aloud before you hit send. Listening to the recording back will show you exactly where your V2 order falls apart. Don't worry about 'de/het' for now; most people in Flanders or the Netherlands will understand you even if you get the gender wrong.

AI is great for output, but only if you constrain it. Use a system prompt like: 'Act as a conversational partner. Every time I make a mistake with a separable verb (e.g., 'ik bel op' vs 'opbellen'), stop me and explain the positioning.' This is a game changer. Also, move your practice to Discord servers where you can use voice-to-text. Seeing your spoken Dutch transcribed by the computer is the fastest way to spot if your word order is actually correct. If it looks like word salad on screen, it sounds like word salad to a native speaker. Focus on shorter sentences first.
