How should I structure my AI output practice to sound less like a textbook?

Posted by u/Appskepticallearne_548 / May 30, 2026

I'm tired of language apps that just make me click bubbles—I want to actually produce Danish. I’ve started using Chickytutor.com to simulate scenarios, but I’m worried I’m picking up 'robot Danish.' How do you prompt an AI to give you feedback on whether a phrase sounds like something an actual Dane in Copenhagen would say, rather than just grammatically correct textbook language?

The biggest issue with AI is that it usually ignores the 'stød' and the soft 'd'. If you want to sound like a local, prompt your AI like this: 'Act as a Dane from Copenhagen. Provide three ways to say [X], ranging from formal to very casual/slangy. Flag any word that a local would naturally elide or swallow.' For instance, no one says 'hvad der' clearly—it becomes 'hva'er'. Ask the AI to write out the sentence, then provide the phonetic reduction. If you just read the textbook version, you’ll sound like a newscaster from 1950. Also, tell the AI to prioritize 'hverdagssprog' over 'litterært sprog'.

Textbooks love the V2 rule, but they fail to account for how Danes shift emphasis by fronting objects. My go-to prompt is: 'I am writing about [topic]. Rewrite this to be more idiomatic, keeping the register informal. Specifically, point out if I’m overusing pronouns or if my word order is too rigid.' Danes often drop the 'jeg' or condense phrases. Also, explicitly tell the AI: 'Assume I am speaking to a friend at a café in Vesterbro.' This forces the model to ditch the stiff, overly polite phrasing that usually makes us sound like robots. It’s all about the rhythm—don't let it give you full sentences that are too long.

Stop relying on text-to-text alone. Even the best AI output is useless if you don't hear the vowel reduction. Use this routine: Ask the AI for a dialogue script about a specific scenario (e.g., ordering coffee or complaining about the DSB train delay). Then, paste that into a high-quality TTS engine like ElevenLabs with a Danish voice. Listen to where the 'soft d' effectively disappears. When you practice, record yourself and ask the AI to analyze your transcript for 'clunky' syntax patterns. If you don't practice the rhythm of the 'stød', the AI will never be able to tell you if you actually sound like a Copenhagener or just a tourist with a good vocabulary.
