Traveling to Zadar next month; how much do I actually need to know about verb aspect?

Don't stress the aspect for a short trip. Honestly, if you say 'Ja želim popiti kavu' (perfective) vs 'Ja želim piti kavu' (imperfective), any waiter in Zadar will understand you perfectly. Focus your energy on the case endings for locative (e.g., 'u Zadru') and basic ordering phrases. If you mess up aspect, you might sound like a toddler, but you'll be a understood toddler. Spend these four weeks drilling 'Molim vas...' and 'Gdje je...'. Context is 90% of the game here. Save the aspect study for once you're back and want to actually become fluent.

Coming from someone who spent way too long crying over 'svršeni' vs 'nesvršeni' verbs: stop. For travel, the biggest trap is actually the stress patterns and the ijekavian forms. If you mispronounce 'lijepo' (nice/beautiful) because you aren't paying attention to the 'ije' dipthong, people might blink. Just learn the present tense of 'htjeti' (to want) and 'moći' (to be able). Use these with the infinitive. It’s a cheat code that lets you bypass aspect entirely for your trip. 'Možete li mi dati...' works for almost everything. Save the aspect nuances for when you're doing proper grammar drills later.

Put the apps down. Find a YouTube video that specifically covers restaurant interactions in Dalmatia. You need to get your ears used to the local rhythm—Dalmatian speakers often clip word endings compared to the Zagreb standard. Instead of worrying about perfective/imperfective, memorize one 'survival' sentence: 'Samo jedan, molim' (Just one, please) and learn the numbers. If you reach for a specific verb and blank on the aspect, just point and use a 'this' (ovo). Nobody is going to fail your 'ordering coffee' exam because you used an imperfective verb. Get comfortable with the Latin alphabet as written in Croatia, specifically the č, ć, š, ž, đ. Mispronouncing those is a bigger hurdle to being understood than aspect.
