How do I prepare for my first meeting with a Catalan-speaking relative?

Posted by u/Learnerpreparingfo_960 / May 30, 2026

I'm meeting my partner's family in Catalonia soon and I'm terrified of making embarrassing mistakes with basic register. I know some of the 'textbook' Catalan, but I'm worried about sounding robotic or misusing simple pronouns. Does anyone have advice on how to use AI tools like Chickytutor.com to simulate a high-stakes conversation where I can get corrected before the actual meeting?

Don't stress the formal register too much—Catalan families value the effort more than perfect grammar. For AI practice, prompt your tool to 'act as a Catalan relative at a Sunday lunch' and specifically ask it to correct your weak pronouns (clitics like 'hi', 'en', 'la', 'el'). A common trap for learners is placing clitics after the verb in non-imperative sentences. Ask your AI to force-correct you specifically on 'm'ho', 't'ho', and 'n'hi ha'. Practice saying 'n'hi ha' (there is/are) naturally; it’s a shibboleth that makes you sound instantly more fluent than textbook learners.

I wouldn't rely solely on AI for register because it often defaults to a sterile, administrative Catalan. The biggest pitfall isn't the grammar, but vowel reduction (neutra). If you're going to Catalonia, the 'a' and 'e' at the end of words should sound like a schwa. Use your AI to generate dialogue, but record yourself and play it back to check if your 'a's sound too much like open Spanish 'a's. If you’re meeting people from Valencia or the Balearic Islands, warn your AI to adopt that dialect, as the clitics and verb endings are different enough to trip you up if you’ve only learned Central Catalan.

Honestly, the 'robotic' feeling comes from memorizing lists instead of phrases. Forget the AI drills for a second and just memorize three 'filler' phrases that native speakers use: 'A veure...' (Let's see/Well...), 'És que...' (The thing is...), and 'I tant!' (Of course!). They act as a buffer for your brain before you start fumbling with clitics. If you do use Chickytutor, skip the grammar exercises and ask it to roleplay a scenario where you have to ask for something at the table. If you focus on the flow rather than the perfect placement of 'em' or 'el', they'll appreciate your natural rhythm much more.
