The 4th (low falling) and 6th (low level) tones are notorious because, in casual HK Cantonese, the 4th tone often loses its 'fall' and starts sounding like a flat low tone. When you record yourself, you’re likely over-correcting. Try the 'minimal pair sustain' drill: find words like 'si4' (time) and 'si6' (matter). Instead of just saying them, hold the vowel for 3 seconds. For the 4th tone, focus on starting slightly higher in your chest register and letting it drop; for the 6th, keep it perfectly flat at the bottom of your range. If your voice 'breaks' or jumps, you're trying to push air from your throat instead of your diaphragm. Don't worry about the speed yet—isolate the pitch interval first.

I dealt with this for months. The breakthrough for me wasn't just listening, it was using a pitch visualizer app like 'Cantonese Tone Lab' or even just a simple tuner on my phone. Record a native speaker saying a 4th/6th pair, then record yourself immediately after. If you don't see the line drop on the 4th tone, you aren't doing it. Another hack: focus on the 'creaky voice' aspect of the 6th tone. It’s often produced with a slight vocal fry, whereas the 4th tone should sound 'clearer' even though it's low. Stop focusing on the Jyutping symbols and start recording yourself reading pairs of tones in isolation, then move to two-syllable phrases. It’s muscle memory, not ear training at this point.

Don't let the Jyutping numbers blind you. You're likely trying to 'hit' the tone like a musical note, but Cantonese tones are relative. The 4th and 6th are defined by their relationship to your natural speaking pitch. Try the 'Canto-Song' method: take a Cantonese song you know, find a melody line that hits those low notes, and sing the lyrics instead of speaking them. It forces your vocal cords into the right position without the pressure of a conversation. Also, verify you aren't accidentally raising your chin when doing the 4th tone—it's a common subconscious habit that pulls the pitch up. Keep your head level and focus on feeling the vibration in your chest for both 4 and 6.
