The best way to drill this for an exam is to use 'news report' exercises. Take a simple factual story about a fictional event—like a protest or a sports game—and write it twice: once as if you were there (aorist/imperfect), and once as if you read it in a paper (renarrative). The key trap is forgetting that the 3rd person doesn't take the 'is' (e) auxiliary—don't write 'той е казал', just 'той казал'. Focus on identifying the source of info. If you are reporting hearsay for the test, always use the l-participle without the auxiliary. It feels unnatural at first, but once you stop trying to translate it to English, it clicks.

I struggled with this for months until I started using the 'Gossip Drill.' Whenever I talk to my Bulgarian flatmate about something I heard from someone else, I force myself to use the renarrative. If you're prepping for an exam, look up 'bta.bg' (the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency). Pick a short report and identify every renarrative form. You'll notice they use it constantly to distance themselves from the facts. For the exam, just memorize the table of L-participle endings. If the verb ends in -а, use -ал; if it ends in -и, use -ил. It’s consistent! Don't overthink the semantics mid-test; just apply the structural rule.

For exam success, you need to master the diagnostic markers. If you see words like 'твърди се' (it is claimed), 'чух, че' (I heard that), or 'оказва се' (it turns out), that is your cue to switch to the renarrative. If you are in a test scenario and you aren't sure, check the context: if the sentence implies the speaker wasn't a witness, use the l-participle. A huge trap is mixing the evidential with the definite suffix. Remember: the evidential is about the *source* of the knowledge, while definite suffixes are about *specificity*. Keep them separate in your planning. Use flashcards for 'renarrative vs. aorist' pairs until you can conjugate them in your sleep.
