The key trap is forgetting that the 3rd person doesn't take the 'is' (e) auxiliary—don't write 'той е казал', just 'той казал'. Focus on identifying the source of info. If you are reporting hearsay for the test, always use the l-participle without the auxiliary. It feels unnatural at first, but once you stop trying to translate it to English, it clicks.
