How do I prep for a face-to-face chat without freezing up?

Posted by u/Falsebeginnerwhofr_370 / May 30, 2026

I’m meeting a Bulgarian native in Sofia next month and I’m terrified I’ll just go silent. I’ve been reading a bit of Cyrillic, but my spoken output is non-existent. I’m thinking of using Chickytutor.com to simulate a first conversation and get feedback on my confidence, but are there specific phrases I should drill to keep the conversation moving when I inevitably panic?

Don't overthink the Cyrillic—just focus on the 'filler' words. If you panic, say 'Как се казва...' (How do you say...) or 'Може ли малко по-бавно?' (Can you say that a bit slower?). Bulgarians are very chatty; if you just use these two, the other person will carry the conversation. Don't worry about the definite articles (-ът/-та) yet; people will understand you perfectly even if you get the gender wrong. Just get comfortable saying 'Здравей' and 'Приятно ми е' with a smile. You'll be fine!

I'd skip the AI simulation for now and drill 'functional chunks' instead. Forget grammar charts; learn 5-10 phrases that signal you're listening, like 'Разбирам, но...' (I understand, but...) or 'Това е интересно!' (That's interesting!). The verb aspect (perfective vs. imperfective) is the real trap—don't try to master it before your trip. Just stick to the present tense and use particles like 'значи' (meaning/so) to buy yourself time. If you freeze, just laugh and say 'Още се уча' (I'm still learning).

If you're using Chickytutor or any LLM, don't just chat randomly. Ask it to specifically act as a 'patient Sofia local' and tell it to correct your definite suffixes only after you finish a full sentence. My advice for the 'freeze' moment: drill the phrase 'Чакай малко' (Wait a second). It’s a natural way to pause. Also, drill the alphabet for menu reading, but don't obsess over spelling—Bulgarians rarely care about typos in casual text, so focus on high-frequency spoken output over visual recognition.
