I only have 20 minutes a day—how can I prioritize speaking?

Posted by u/Busyprofessionalwi_950 / May 30, 2026

Between work and family, I barely have 20 minutes of dedicated study time for Bosnian. I’m tired of just doing flashcards—I really want to get my mouth moving. I’ve started using Chickytutor.com for short, focused correction since I often don't know if I'm pronouncing the 'c' and 'ć' sounds differently correctly. Is 20 minutes enough to make any measurable progress, or am I just kidding myself?

20 minutes is actually perfect if you stop doing flashcards and start 'shadowing.' Forget the apps for a second. Find a short news clip from Al Jazeera Balkans, listen to one sentence, pause it, and mimic the speaker exactly. Focus on the ijekavian forms—don't just say 'mlijeko,' really stretch that 'ije' dipthong. For 'c' vs 'ć', record yourself saying 'cesta' (road) vs 'ćelija' (cell). If you can't hear the difference in your own recording, keep practicing the tongue placement. You don't need hours; you need 20 minutes of intense focus.

I feel you on the time crunch. I hit a wall with cases too. My hack for the 20-minute window: 'Narrate your life.' Don't study, just speak. While you're making coffee or driving, describe what you're doing in Bosnian. 'Pijem kafu' (I am drinking coffee). If you don't know the word, look it up, say it, and move on. Regarding Chickytutor, it's fine for the 'c/ć/č' distinctions, but don't obsess over perfection. Locals will understand you even if your palatal sounds aren't 100% crisp. Prioritize fluency over accent-pedantry in your first year.

Don't let the Cyrillic/Latin split derail you. Since you're short on time, stick to Latin script for now—it's standard for most business and personal communication in B&H anyway. If you want to make that 20 minutes count for speaking, stop reading and start audio-logging. Use a voice memo app to summarize your day in 3 sentences. Focus on the verb aspect: pick one perfective and one imperfective verb daily to practice. If you mess up the case endings, don't sweat it; the meaning usually comes through. Consistency beats 'perfect' study sessions every time.
