Ditch the 'Izvinite, gdje se nalazi...' (Excuse me, where is located...). It sounds like a police report. Locals usually just start with 'Drug,' or 'Izvini, molim te,' followed by 'kako da dođem do...' (how do I get to...). Also, don't overthink the cases. If you fumble the instrumental case, nobody cares as long as you're polite. A great drill: find a map of Baščaršija and practice asking for 'Sebilj' or 'Vijećnica' using 'kako da dođem do X' instead of 'gdje je X'. Using 'do' + Genitive is way more natural for getting around than the standard textbook 'gdje je'.

The biggest trap for learners is the Ijekavian shift—don't say 'mlieko' like a Croatian textbook might; keep it 'mlijeko'. If you want to sound like a local, use 'ba' as a filler or at the end of sentences, but be careful—it’s very informal. For your directions, try: 'Jarane, znaš li možda gdje je tramvajska stanica?' It’s colloquial but not rude. Avoid AI-translated 'možete li me uputiti', it sounds like you're reading a Victorian novel.

Stop obsessing over the apps. They teach you BHS (Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian) which is fine, but they miss the regional flavour. In Sarajevo, people say 'u gradu' (in town) for the center. If you're lost, just walk into a kafana, order a 'bosanska kafa', and ask the waiter 'kako da stignem do...'. Use the imperative 'reci mi' (tell me) instead of the complex 'možete li mi reći'. If you get the cases wrong, just laugh and say 'Učim bosanski još uvijek' (I'm still learning Bosnian). Locals are remarkably helpful if you show the effort.
