Does anyone actually use Cyrillic in Bosnia and Herzegovina today?

As a teacher, I always tell my beginners to prioritize Latin script for your first three months. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Latin is the standard for daily life, social media, and road signs in Federation areas. Cyrillic is used, but it's a secondary skill for a newcomer. If you want to drill, take a simple text—like a recipe for ćevapi—and use an online transliterator to switch it to Cyrillic. Look for common characters like 'м' (m) vs 'т' (t). Stick to one script until your brain masters the cases (padeži); trying to learn the grammar and a new alphabet simultaneously is a recipe for burnout.

I wasted way too much time obsessing over Cyrillic on day one. Unless you're planning to move to Republika Srpska or work in government archives, you really don't need it yet. Focus on the ijekavian forms (like 'mlijeko' vs 'mleko'). If you get confused by the script, you'll miss the subtle vowel shifts that actually define the Bosnian variant. My advice: buy a copy of 'Bosanski jezik za strance' and stick to Latin. Once you can navigate basic cases—especially the instrumental and locative—then spend 15 minutes a week on Cyrillic. It’s much easier to learn the script once you actually know the vocabulary.

Totally valid concern. Here is a practical drill: download the 'Anki' app and find a Bosnian deck. Make sure the cards are in Latin script. If you see Cyrillic, set it aside. The trap isn't the script; it's the aspect (perfective vs. imperfective) and the noun declensions. You will be reading Latin script 99% of the time you are out in Sarajevo or Mostar. If you really want to learn Cyrillic, treat it as a separate 'side quest' once you hit A2 level. For now, focus on the 'dž', 'č', 'ć', and 'š' in Latin—if you can't hear the difference between those, the script doesn't matter yet.
