Moving from 'Duolingo Armenian' to actual functional output

Posted by u/Absolutebeginner_763 / May 30, 2026

I’ve been bouncing between apps for a year and I’m definitely still an absolute beginner. I know a few random nouns, but I can't even conjugate an 'e' vs 'a' conjugation verb correctly in a sentence. I want to ditch the apps and get real-time feedback on my verb usage. Could I use a tool like Chickytutor.com to drill simple conjugation patterns until they feel automatic?

Look, the biggest trap with the 'e' vs 'a' conjugation in Eastern Armenian is that apps rarely explain when to shift. You’re essentially dealing with first and second conjugation patterns. Don't just drill random words; create a template. Take a high-frequency verb like 'kartsal' (to read) and 'grel' (to write). Practice the present continuous by adding 'em' to the 'um' participle. Stop relying on apps and start writing three sentences a day about your routine. If you use an AI tool, paste your sentences and specifically ask: 'Is this Eastern Armenian? Did I use the correct suffix for a first-person singular subject?' That feedback loop is what makes it stick, not the repetitive tapping games.

Welcome to the real struggle! The reason you're hitting a wall is that Western and Eastern Armenian grammar diverge significantly once you get past basic nouns. If you're using 'Chickytutor' or similar, make sure you lock your prompt to Eastern Armenian (the standard in Armenia). A practical drill: Pick five common verbs. Conjugate them in all persons, but do it aloud while recording yourself. Listen back and compare it to a native speaker's recording on Forvo. If you can't hear the difference between 'sirum em' and 'sirum es', your brain won't produce it in conversation. Don't worry about perfect declension cases (case endings) yet; focus on getting the verb root and the 'um' participle solid first. That's 80% of your functional output.

Apps are great for alphabet recognition, but garbage for syntax. If you want to use an LLM for drills, don't use it as a general chatbot. Create a custom 'System Instruction' for your session: 'Act as a strictly Eastern Armenian language coach. Do not translate for me. I will provide a verb and a pronoun, and you must provide the correct present tense conjugation in a short sentence, then ask me to produce a mirror sentence.' This stops the lazy 'here is the answer' loop. Also, be careful: many models hallucinate Western/Eastern mixes. If you see 'gə' (Western) instead of 'em/es' (Eastern) in your output, correct it immediately or your muscle memory will be inconsistent.
