Welcome to Cairo! Skip the MSA books for now—our daily life is purely dialect. If you try to speak MSA here, people might think you're reciting a poem or a sermon. Use your 20 minutes to master the 'Eid'—the Egyptian 'how-to' phrases. Learn 'aiwa' (yes), 'la'a' (no), and 'ayzak/ayzak eih?' (what do you want?). Download the 'Kaleela' app, they have a decent Egyptian track. Also, learn the numbers! Egyptian market prices rely on quick mental math in the dialect. Focus on speaking, not reading script, for the next few months.

Since you’re heading to Cairo in a few months, drop the MSA for now. MSA is great for news, but Egyptians won't use it in the street. Focus entirely on Egyptian (Masri). With only 20 minutes, don't waste time on complex root grammar tables. Instead, practice 'receptive' listening: use the 'Mango Languages' Egyptian course or watch short clips of Egyptian YouTubers. Focus on the 'G' sound (the Egyptian 'Qaf' becomes a hard 'G') and drill basic 'survival' verb conjugations in the present tense. If you can handle a taxi conversation and order food, you’ve succeeded for a short trip.

I started with MSA and it was a mistake for travel. You end up sounding like a 1970s news anchor. If you only have 20 mins, do this: commit 15 mins to the 'Pimsleur Egyptian' audio method while you commute, and use the other 5 mins to learn 3 common Egyptian nouns or verbs from the 'Living Language' app. Emphatic consonants are tricky, but don't obsess over them yet—Egyptians will understand you even if your /ṣ/ or /ḍ/ isn't perfect. Prioritize learning the negation structure (mish) and the future tense (ha-), which differ significantly from MSA.
