20 minutes is actually plenty if you stop using apps and start 'drill-stacking.' Apps keep you in passive mode, but Amharic requires active recall for verb roots. Spend those 20 minutes specifically on the base verb forms (triliterals like S-B-R for 'to break'). Create a chart of the simple past and present for one root per week. Practice your ejectives (like 'q' or 'ts') by recording yourself saying 'qwanqwa' (language) and 'tsehay' (sun). If you can't hear the difference in your own recording, you're just glossing over the mechanics. Spend your 20 minutes mastering the sound, not clicking buttons.

Apps are bad for Amharic because they don't explain the root-pattern system. You're trying to memorize words individually, which is impossible with Amharic's morphology. With 20 minutes, use Anki to build a deck based on triliteral roots. Learn one root, then spend 10 minutes seeing how the vowels change to shift the meaning. Use the remaining 10 minutes to speak one self-recorded sentence about your day using those roots. If you don't anchor the root, you'll reach a plateau where you have 500 words but zero conversational flow. Focus on patterns, not vocabulary lists.
