Getting ready for my first conversation with a native speaker

Posted by u/Preparingforfirstc_532 / May 30, 2026

I've been self-studying for months using just books and flashcards, but I’m terrified to speak. I’ve started using Chickytutor.com to simulate a real conversation, and it’s been incredibly helpful for catching my errors, but I’m still nervous about the 'human' element. What are some essential, low-stakes phrases in Afrikaans I can use if I get completely lost or forget a word that will keep the conversation going naturally?

Don't stress, most South Africans are just happy you're trying! If you blank out, use: 'Jammer, hoe sê mens nou weer...?' (Sorry, how do you say... again?). Also, 'Kan jy dit asseblief herhaal?' is your best friend. The biggest trap for learners is the double negative placement—don't overthink it, just focus on getting the 'nie' at the end. Use the 'sandwich' method: start with a common phrase, insert your struggle, and end with a question to put the ball back in their court. You’ll be fine!

Since you're used to the rigid feedback of an AI, you need to practice 'filler' sounds. Afrikaans speakers use 'eintlik' (actually) and 'mos' (as you know) to buy time. Practice drill: record yourself explaining your day; if you hit a wall, force yourself to say 'Wag, laat ek dink...' (Wait, let me think) instead of stopping. It keeps the flow natural. Don't worry about the separable verbs yet—even if you mess up the word order, they’ll understand you. Keep it simple, keep it moving.

I was exactly where you are last year. The AI tools are great for vocab, but they don't prepare you for the speed of colloquial Afrikaans. If you get stuck, just say: 'My Afrikaans is nog bietjie roesig, help my asseblief.' (My Afrikaans is still a bit rusty, please help me). It breaks the ice instantly. Also, stop worrying about your vowel sounds—our pronunciation varies so much between regions (like the difference between a Cape accent and a Free State one) that 'perfect' isn't really a thing. Just speak up!
