As a teacher, I see this constantly. You are reading, not listening. Switch to 'RSG' (Radio Sonder Grense) podcasts or audiobooks. Because there is no visual, your brain is forced to process the audio stream, including those tricky separable verbs where the prefix jumps to the end of the sentence. If you rely on the screen, your eyes will always win. Start with short 5-minute segments. If you don't understand the main point after three listens, then look at the transcript—not the English translation. Don't use English as a bridge; bridge from Afrikaans text to Afrikaans audio.

The 'subtitle crutch' is tough because Afrikaans speakers often link words, making it sound much faster than the written text suggests. Try the 'Shadowing with Audio' drill: pick a 30-second scene from a show like 'Die Byl'. Watch it once with English subs, once with Afrikaans subs, and then three times with NO subs. In those last three, don't worry about perfect comprehension; focus purely on mimicking the cadence and the specific vowel sounds, especially the 'ui' and 'eu' diphthongs. If you don't hear those clearly, your brain ignores the rest of the sentence. Speed is secondary to rhythm.

I hit this wall last year. My advice: stop watching new dramas and re-watch something you've already seen in English, but dubbed in Afrikaans. Since you know the plot beats, your brain isn't panicking to translate the story, which frees up processing power for the syntax. Also, watch out for the double negative trap (nie... nie). When you're reading, you see the structure, but speakers often swallow the second 'nie'. If you just listen, you might miss the negation entirely. Switching to Afrikaans-only subs for a week—instead of turning them off completely—is a great middle ground.
