Struggling to keep my separable verbs in the right place during live chats

Posted by u/Falsebeginner_534 / May 30, 2026

I’ve been practicing on Chickytutor.com to improve my conversational speed, but I keep tripping over separable verbs like 'opstaan' or 'saamgaan'. When I'm in the middle of a sentence, I freeze trying to remember where to push that prefix. Does anyone have a mental trick for tracking the placement of these prefixes during real-time speech without sounding like I'm reading from a textbook? I am asking specifically about learning Afrikaans, not a generic study routine.

Stop overthinking the grammar rules while you're talking. Think of the separable prefix as a 'tag' that belongs at the very end of your thought. If you're struggling with 'opstaan', practice the infinitive as a single concept, then force yourself to pause for a microsecond before the prefix. Try this: 'Ek staan... vroeg op.' That pause is perfectly natural in South African speech—it helps you gather your thoughts and actually makes you sound more like a local than someone rushing to finish a sentence. Don't worry about the 'textbook' flow; focus on the rhythm.

The trap is treating Afrikaans like English where verbs are static. I found success by practicing 'sentence anchors'. Instead of trying to remember the prefix for a specific verb, memorize the common 'Stomp' (STOMPI) word order pattern. When I speak, I visualize the sentence as a track. The verb stays put, and the prefix is just the train car that always goes to the station at the end. Use 'saamgaan' as a ritual: 'Ek wil vir die partytjie saam... gaan.' If you mess up the placement, just add the prefix at the end anyway—people will get you. It’s part of the process.

Ditch the apps for a bit. Chickytutor is fine for vocab, but it doesn't train the muscle memory for sentence structure. Here’s a drill: Pick five separable verbs (opstaan, saamgaan, inbel, wegry, uitstap). Write three simple sentences for each, but leave the prefix blank. Record yourself saying them out loud, filling in the gap with a high-pitched emphasis on the prefix. It sounds silly, but it forces your brain to physically prepare for the end of the sentence. Once you get the 'hike' in your pitch, the prefix placement will start feeling like a natural release rather than a grammar chore.
